Characters: Colonies are usually encrusting, submassive or form plates with nodular upgrowths at their centre. Corallites are crowded and immersed. Thecal and coenosteum papillae are present although not as well developed as in other species of the group, and only on upgrowths.

Colour: Dark brown, green or blue, sometimes with cream tips to nodules.

Similar Species: Montipora peltiformis and M. grisea, both of which have better developed thecal papillae. See also M. dilatata, which has widely spaced papillae.

Habitat: Turbid environments.

Abundance: Common.
