Characters: Colonies are irregular clumps, columns and plates. Corallites are mostly immersed, with fine but distinct walls. The coenosteum is coarse. Low tuberculae are sometimes present.

Colour: Uniform brown, blue (which may photograph pink) or purple, sometimes with pale plate margins.

Similar Species: Montipora spongodes. See also M. turtlensis and M. turgescens.

Habitat: Subtidal mud flats and in other inshore habitats.

Abundance: Especially common in high latitude locations of Australia.

Taxonomic Note: A species complex.
