Psammocora haimiana

Milne Edwards and Haime, 1851

Psammocora

Dana, 1846

Characters: Colonies are encrusting or submassive. Corallites are situated at the bottom of depressions or are in short non-meandering valleys. Walls have acute tops. Primary septo-costae are petaloid but are not exsert.

Colour: Uniform grey, brown or sometimes bright colours.

Similar Species: Psammocora profundacella, which has less valley formation, more distinct corallite centres and less acute walls. Superficially resembles Pavona venosa and Gardineroseris planulata.

Habitat: Shallow reef environments.

Abundance: Uncommon.

Taxonomic Note: The interpretation by Veron and Pichon (1976) has been updated to follow the current treatment by Benzoni, Stefani, Pichon et al. (2010). In accordance with these authors we use the spelling haimeana for Psammocora haimeana sensu Klunzinger (1879b) and others including Veron (2000a) which is a different species now synonymised with Psammocora profundacella.

Taxonomic References: Benzoni, Stefani, Pichon et al. (2010); Veron (1986a) as Psammocora digitata; Nishihira and Veron (1995) as Psammocora digitata;

Identification Guides: Coles (1996) as Psammocora digitata; Turak and DeVantier (2011b);
