Lithophyllon lobata

(van der Horst, 1921)

Lithophyllon

Rehberg, 1892

Characters: Usually only one large central corallite is formed and this is distinctive. Peripheral corallites are usually much smaller. Sometimes there is a small cluster of central corallites. Septo-costae radiate from the central corallite, are thin, wavy and exsert and may have tentacular lobes.

Colour: Brown, may be mottled.

Similar Species: Lithophyllon lobata is distinguished from L. undulatum by having a prominent central corallite.

Habitat: Reef environments and rocky foreshores.

Abundance: Usually uncommon.

Taxonomic Note: Considered a synonym of Lithophyllon undulatum by Hoeksema (1989a), and renamed as Lithophyllon ranjithi by Ditlev (2003), we consider the original description by van der Horst to fit this species.
