Acropora fragilis

(Bassett-Smith, 1890)

Acropora

Oken, 1815

Characters: Colonies are irregular tables, sometimes over one metre across, with horizontal branches forming an open network. Upright branchlets are not developed towards the colony margins. Axial corallites are long and tubular and incipient axial corallites are irregular. Radial corallites are immersed on main branches and are triangular in shape, with nariform openings.

Colour: Pale brown.

Habitat: Shallow reef environments.

Abundance: Rare.

Taxonomic Note: Previously named Acropora rambleri in Veron (2000a), the species name is changed here following examination of type specimens at BMNH. Two species in Bassett-Smith (1890b), A. rambleri and A. fragilis, have labelling issues which have created taxonomic confusion. The A. rambleri of Veron (2000a) is A. fragilis. Wallace (1999) correctly considered one of the labelled A. rambleri types a probable junior synonym of Acropora speciosa. Another specimen (1889.0.24.153) is actually the previously lost A. fragilis holotype. The illustrations of A. fragilis given here accord with this latter specimen.
