Acropora eurystoma

(Klunzinger, 1879)

Acropora

Oken, 1815

Characters: Colonies are corymbose clumps which may be extensive. Branchlets are evenly spaced. Axial corallites are distinct and tubular. Radial corallites are arranged in a neat rosette and have slightly flaring lips.

Colour: Grey-brown.

Similar Species: Similar to Acropora tenuis, but has sturdier branches and larger corallites. Note, however, that these are the characteristics of A. tenuis from shallow habitats. This issue requires field study as the species are not reliably distinguished in collections.

Habitat: Shallow reef flats and upper slopes.

Abundance: Common.

Taxonomic Note: Similar to Acropora tenuis. Considered a valid species by Wallace (1999) on the basis of sturdier branches and larger corallites, but these are the characteristics of A. tenuis from shallow habitats. Considered a synonym of A. tenuis by Veron (2000a). The type specimen is lost. The issue requires field study as these species are not reliably distinguished in collections. See Marenzeller (1906), Hoffmeister (1925), Pillai (1972), Pillai, Vine and Scheer (1973) for previous use of this name.
