Taxonomic note: Hydnophora grandis sensu Veron (2000a) is an un-named valid entity incorrectly called Hydnophora grandis Gardiner, 1904. A new name is warranted for this entity. The type specimen of Hydnophora grandis Gardiner, 1904 (figured Gardiner, 1904a: Plate LX, Fig. 11), is plate-like with the characters of H. exesa from a sheltered habitat
