Characters: Colonies are submassive to encrusting or form extensive, thick unifacial plates. Corallites are small and exsert, with elongate thecal papillae. The colony surface has a rough appearance.
Colour: Mostly brown with brightly coloured polyps.
Similar Species: Montipora patula has exsert corallites of similar size but papillae are less exsert. Montipora stilosa has more prominent coenosteum papillae.
Habitat: Most reef environments.
Abundance: Uncommon.
