Characters: Flat or crateriform unifacial plates, centrally attached. Corallites are widely spaced, outwardly inclined with a deep fossa. Septo-costae are tightly compacted, with crenelated margins.
Colour: Grey or brown.
Similar Species: Leptoseris foliosa has similar appearance but septo-costae lack crenelated margins.
Habitat: Occurs in mesophotic habitats, typically on relatively inaccessible deep reef slopes. Occasionally on shallower turbid slopes.
Abundance: Rare.
Taxonomic Note: The type species of Craterastrea Head, 1983. Previously synonymised with Leptoseris foliosa by Veron (1993a).
