Astreopora

Characters: Colonies are up to 1 m diameter and consist of a combination of vertical branches and small plates all stemming from a thick basal plate. Corallites are immersed to tubular with rounded or oval openings 1.7-2.2 mm diameter. Primary septa may form a simple columella. The coenosteum is covered with highly elaborated spinules.

Colour: Pale to dark brown and purple-grey.

Similar Species: Astreopora moretonensis sometimes forms chimney-like columns but otherwise this species is unlike any other.

Habitat: Sandy reef flats and upper slopes.

Abundance: Uncommon.
