Astrea devantieri

(Veron, 2000)

Astrea

Lamarck, 1801

Characters: Colonies are smooth massive boulders up to 1.5 metres across. Corallites are uniform, 3-5 millimetres diameter with well defined walls. Septa are in two distinct orders of 6-8 and are exsert. Paliform lobes are inconspicuous. Columellae are small.

Colour: Red to orange, usually with green centres.

Similar Species: Plesiastrea versipora, which has more septa and conspicuous paliform lobes.

Habitat: Shallow reef environments.

Abundance: Seldom common.

Taxonomic Note: Further evaluation of types has recognised this species as a synonym of the previously described but little known species Astrea rotulosa (Ellis and Solander, 1786). More recently Astrea (= Plesiastrea) devantieri was retained by Huang, Benzoni, Fukami et al. (2014) as a separate ‘sister’ species, but the holotype of Plesiastrea devantieri is unambiguously A. rotulosa.
