Acropora navini

Veron, 2000

Acropora

Oken, 1815

Characters: Colonies are bushy or have thick bottlebrush-like branches. Branchlets and sub-branchlets are compact and of uniform shape. Axial and incipient axial corallites intergrade with radial corallites and are distinctively tubular, with truncated ends. Small radial corallites are pocket-shaped.

Colour: Generally grey-brown.

Similar Species: Acropora longicyathus, which has shorter corallites that are not truncated. See also A. elseyi, which does not have branchlets of uniform length and truncated corallites.

Habitat: Shallow reef slopes and fringing reefs.

Abundance: Common.

Taxonomic Note: A cryptic species very similar to but distinct from Acropora longicyathus. Placed in synonymy with A. longicyathus by Wallace, Done and Muir (2012). The difference between these species, the relatively truncated shape of radial corallites of A. navini, is small making them difficult to separate except where they occur together.
