Ditlev, 2003

Plerogyra

Milne Edwards and Haime, 1848

Characters: Colonies are phaceloid. Corallites are mostly monocentric. Septa are very large, solid, exsert, with smooth margins and sides. Columellae are absent or formed of a twised septum. Polyps or polyp vesicles are extended during the day and have a warty surface.

Colour: Red-brown with pale polyp warts.

Similar Species: Plerogyga sinuosa may develop a similar growth form if colonies become partly buried in mud. Polyps are unlike other Plerogyra but are very like those of Euphyllia yaeyamaensis.

Habitat: Soft mud.

Abundance: Unknown.

Taxonomic Note: Not listed as a valid species in a taxonomic revision since the original publication. Requires further study, especially delineating from Plerogyra simplex in turbid environments.
