Acropora variabilis

(Klunzinger, 1879)

Acropora

Oken, 1815

Characters: Colonies form compact irregular or digitate bushes to corymbose plates. Axial corallites are small. Radial corallites are an irregular mixture of sizes from immersed to long and appressed with slightly nariform openings. Colonies have a spikey appearance.

Colour: Dark proximal parts of branches and paler distal parts.

Similar Species: Acropora valida, which is distinctively digitate, with swollen radial corallites. See also A. lianae, which has finer branches and rounded corallites.

Habitat: Shallow reef environments.

Abundance: Uncommon.

Taxonomic Note: Mistakenly placed in synonymy with Acropora valida by Veron and Wallace (1984) and Wallace (1999) . Widely used in earlier publications, it does not closely resemble A. valida.
